Recently the local cable company reprogrammed the area channel assignments. Because of the content of some cable channels and the presence of children in the family, it was agreed that several channels would be blocked from viewing. The result of this reassignment was that many of the channels that were previously blocked needed to be located and re-blocked.
During the process of learning the new channel configuration and restoring the blocked channels, I had to unblock CNN to allow for viewing. That night there was an interview with Dr. Drew Pinsky, better known as Dr. Drew and for his radio and TV shows, is a practicing medical doctor specializing in addiction medicine and therapy. Included in the interview was a partial cast from his new TV reality show on VH1, Sex Rehab. Sex Rehab is a reality show documenting the recovery process of eight individuals in an in-patient setting addressing sexual addiction in their lives.
Being in recovery for over eight years, it is always interesting to see how the media portrays sexual addiction. It was good to hear familiar terms like, “childhood traumas,
emotional, physical or sexual abuse, and drug of choice, sobriety, accountability and intimacy disorder.”
After reviewing the show’s web page on VH1.com, there was no doubt that watching an episode would require good accountability. Since it is a secular reality show there is the use of graphic language, the participants or counselors show no spirituality and male and females participate in the program together.
One of the great things that this show demonstrates is that sexual addiction is not just a man's struggle; half of the participants are women who also struggle and need healing as well. According to the National Council on Sexual Addiction Compulsivity, it is estimated that 6%-8% of Americans are sex addicts, which is 18 million - 24 million people; and of those, 2% -4% are female.
L.I.F.E. Ministries does not necessarily endorse this show or its teachings, but we do agree on many of the tenants that are mentioned during the recent interviews with Dr. Drew and the participants of the show, as well as the processes that must take place for true recovery.
The combination of this show and the recent awareness of other well-known celebrities seeking help, shows that L.I.F.E. Ministries has never been more poised to offer support to those who may be inspired to begin their own journey of healing and leave the shadows of shame behind.
It is L.I.F.E.’s prayer that all would come to know the Lord and His healing in the journey of recovery, and we have faith that no matter what tools God uses to increase His army in battle against sexual addiction that the war will be won.
L.I.F.E. Ministries' Mission is to Encourage, Empower, and Equip God's People to Live Everyday in Sexual Integrity.
